In the bottom of the 9th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals 3 outs from winning the World Series, Umpire Don Denkinger calls Royals Jorge Orta safe at first when he was clearly out. When the dust settled, the Royals won that game and blew out St. Louis the next night in Game 7. No World Series title for the Cards that year.

McGwire may never get into the Hall of Fame but his alleged steroid use didn't keep him from getting a job with his old team. McGwire will replace hitting coach Hal McRae. McGwire was noticeably absent from the press conference where Tony LaRussa made the official announcement.

Curt Flood was an All-Star outfielder and seven-time Gold Glove winner for the St. Louis Cardinals. But when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies following the 1969 season, he challenged baseball's long-standing reserve system. He lost but eventually the players won big with the reserve clause abolished and free agency (and big salaries) soon to follow.
